Robert Smith himself has shared various ideas about its meaning, even mentioning that he was inspired by the unsettling songs his father used to sing to him, and how they always ended disturbingly. The director of its music videos, Tim Pope, also contributed his vision, suggesting that the lyrics are an allegory of Smith's past marked by drug use. The music accompanies this feeling with an enveloping rhythm, adorned by the sound of violins and strings that create a dense and captivating sonic texture, all enhanced by Smith's whispering voice.

In it, Smith is seen in bed, in a dreamlike sequence, while the rest of the band appears as tin soldiers. The video culminates with Smith, who plays both the cannibal spider from the lyrics and its victim, being devoured by a giant creature.
