The story behind

Lullaby, according to DoReSol

The atmosphere that surrounds Lullaby is unmistakably dark and suggestive. From the very first moment, the song immerses you in a narrative that evokes images of childhood nightmares, or perhaps, as some have interpreted, metaphors about addictions or states of deep melancholy. Robert Smith himself has shared various ideas about its meaning, even mentioning that he was inspired by the unsettling songs his father used to sing to him, and how they always ended disturbingly. The director of its music videos, Tim Pope, also contributed his vision, suggesting that the lyrics are an allegory of Smith's past marked by drug use. The music accompanies this feeling with an enveloping rhythm, adorned by the sound of violins and strings that create a dense and captivating sonic texture, all enhanced by Smith's whispering voice.

This piece, part of The Cure's eighth studio album, Disintegration, was released as a single on April 10, 1989. It was co-written by Robert Smith and produced with Dave Allen. The track not only became the band's most successful single in their native country, reaching fifth place on the UK Singles Chart, but also resonated strongly elsewhere, reaching third place in Ireland and West Germany, and positioning itself in the top ten in several European nations and New Zealand. The music video accompanying Lullaby, directed by Tim Pope, was filmed in a studio in London and won the award for Best British Video at the 1990 Brit Awards. In it, Smith is seen in bed, in a dreamlike sequence, while the rest of the band appears as tin soldiers. The video culminates with Smith, who plays both the cannibal spider from the lyrics and its victim, being devoured by a giant creature.
