The story behind
Queen recorded Love of My Life in 1975, during the production of A Night at the Opera. The song was released on that album, which they recorded in a barn that later became Ridge Farm Studio. The song was written by Freddie Mercury on piano and guitar, and Brian May adapted it for 12-string acoustic guitar. He also lowered the key and added some phrasing. The song includes a harp, something rare at the time. The band first performed the song live during the News of the World Tour in 1977. It became one of their favorites for concerts, especially in South America. There, the fans knew it by heart, sang with precision, and joined in with the rhythm. Mercury often stopped singing and directed the audience, something that became more common in these shows. The version from Live Killers reached number 1 in Argentina and Brazil and stayed on the charts for a year. After the death of Mercury, Brian May dedicated the song on several occasions. In a concert in Sheffield, he dedicated it to Mercury's mother. He also performed it in Queen + Paul Rodgers, letting the audience take the lead as he did. In 2015, Queen + Adam Lambert included it in a Rock in Rio concert, along with archival material from Mercury. ↓ Skip to chords
