The story behind

What makes *Longview* so catchy, beyond its energy, is the way it captures a feeling of deep weariness. The lyrics speak of a aimless journey, of being trapped in inaction and repetition until everything loses its spark. It's a raw depiction of frustration and purposelessness, but the music itself is far from boring. In fact, bassist Mike Dirnt has shared that the iconic bass line that opens the song was born one night while he was under the influence of LSD. The band recorded this track at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, and it was part of their third studio album, Dookie, released in 1994.

This single was Green Day's first to reach the top of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. The music video, directed by Mark Kohr, received heavy rotation on MTV and is considered key to the band gaining massive recognition. In 1995, the song received four Grammy nominations, including one for Best Hard Rock Performance. Rolling Stone magazine placed it third on its list of the "Best Singles of 1994." The song's name comes from the city of Longview, Washington, where the band first played in the spring of 1992, as commented by Billie Joe Armstrong. To plan that tour, the band used the tool Book Your Own Fucking Life and connected with venues like the Cafe Forum in Longview, or even with local bands like The Jimmies, who offered them a place to stay. In that context, they also toured with Aaron Cometbus, drummer for Crimpshrine and author of the fanzine *Cometbus*, who played an important role in connecting the Berkeley punk scene with the broader DIY scene.
