The story behind
To generate attention for her third album, *Miss E... So Addictive*, Missy Elliott released "Lick Shots" as a promotional single. Although it was not intended to be an official album cut, this song served to build anticipation before the album's release, which occurred in May 2001. The production of this track, like many of her creations, was handled by Elliott herself along with her usual collaborator Timbaland. The recording took place at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles.
"Lick Shots" is distinguished by its incorporation of an uncredited sample from "Simchat He'amel," performed by Effi Netzer. The track previously appeared as a snippet in the music video for "Get Ur Freak On," another of Elliott's earlier singles. Following its promotional release, the song managed to chart on lists such as Billboard Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. Years later, in April 2008, "Lick Shots" was featured during a hip-hop challenge on the dance competition show *So You Think You Can Dance Scandinavia*.
