The story behind

When Missy Elliott was in the final stages of producing her third album, Miss E... So Addictive (2001), she felt something crucial was missing. It was at that moment that her usual collaborator, Timbaland, experimented with a keyboard, shaping a series of sounds that would end up forming the basis of what would become Get Ur Freak On. The result is a track that stands out for incorporating elements of bhangra, a popular form of music and dance from the Punjab region of India. The main six-note melody is based on a pattern from the tumbi, an Indian string instrument, accompanied by rhythms and basslines from the tabla. This sonic fusion, along with the inclusion of phrases in Hindi and Japanese, gives it a unique sonic identity.

The release of Get Ur Freak On as the album's lead single in March 2001 had an immediate impact. It reached number seven on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart and became her first top 10 hit in the UK, reaching number four. A remix featuring Nelly Furtado also resonated on the dance floors. The song has been recognized on multiple occasions, being named the best song of the 21st century by Rolling Stone magazine in 2025. In 2002, Get Ur Freak On earned Missy Elliott a Grammy award for Best Solo Rap Performance. The music video, directed by Dave Meyers, also generated attention for its visual aesthetic, with Elliott and her dancers deploying movements and effects that evoked images from films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
