The story behind
The way *Lean On* was born is a fascinating example of how an idea can mutate and find its path. It all started with an instrumental created by Jr Blender in Trinidad. Diplo, a member of Major Lazer, felt it had a powerful hook, but the initial production lacked the energy they were looking for. A year later, Diplo revisited the track, modifying the tempo and asking DJ Snake to add his distinctive touch to the latter part of the chorus. It was then that Diplo, along with MØ and Jr Blender, rewrote the song in Las Vegas, giving it that unique identity that would make it the main track of their album. Curiously, Diplo had offered a slower, reggae-arranged version to artists like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, who rejected it. He himself acknowledged that this was a "blessing in disguise," as MØ's interpretation turned out to be perfect.
This track, released on March 2, 2015, became a resounding success, reaching number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and second place on the UK singles chart. Its popularity spread globally, topping charts in countries like Argentina, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Mexico, and Switzerland, and ranking among the top ten in about twenty more. By November 2015, Spotify recognized it as the most streamed song of all time up to that point, surpassing one billion streams in June 2017. The music video, filmed in India and at Stockholm City Hall, has garnered billions of views on YouTube. The song, classified as EDM, electronic, and moombahton, was written by MØ, Diplo, DJ Snake, Tchami, and Jr Blender, and produced by Major Lazer and DJ Snake. In February 2026, a new version was released with an additional verse by Italian singer Alfa.
