The story behind
The story behind Lake of Fire takes us to a Halloween night, where a reflection on appearance and the "fall of man" inspired a song that, although described by its author as a "discard" and a "cartoon," would resonate unexpectedly. The composer, Curt Kirkwood, recounted that while his bandmates and friends were attending a party, he stayed home, feeling that adults were dressing up in a trivial way, when human nature was already "ugly" enough. This idea, captured in the lyrics, became the heart of a piece that, in its original 1984 version for the album Meat Puppets II, was labeled as Cowpunk.
The true explosion of Lake of Fire came in 1993, when the band Nirvana decided to perform it along with two other songs by the Meat Puppets during their MTV Unplugged special. This performance, recorded on November 18 at Sony Music Studios in New York, featured Curt Kirkwood on guitar and his brother Cris Kirkwood on bass and backing vocals. The show aired in December of the same year and, following the death of Kurt Cobain in April 1994, acquired a particular resonance. The live album, MTV Unplugged in New York, released in November 1994, reached number one on the Billboard 200. This acoustic version, which was also included as a hidden track on the Meat Puppets' 1994 album Too High to Die, received radio airplay in Australia.
