The story behind

La tripleta, according to DoReSol

In La Tripleta the stroke of luck lies in how the rhythm breaks just when everything seems about to fall into a predictable loop. It's not just the change of time signature that surprises — it's that this break sounds as if someone had tripped over the beat and, instead of fixing it, left it hanging between what has already passed and what is to come. The track moves forward with a confidence that asks for no permission, but that instant of imbalance makes it memorable: it's not music you listen to, it's music you feel in your gut.

The song was born on Calle 13's debut album, a record that was recorded with whatever they had at hand and ended up sounding like a manifesto. The album was released in 2005, but the idea behind Atrévete-te-te — the single that precedes it — had already been brewing since 2004, when the group stood up to Puff Daddy and sang their truths to his clothing brand. That same year, the album sold enough copies for Nielsen to register 250,000 units in the United States by 2008, and in 2006 it won the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album. They weren't aiming to fill stadiums, but the album stayed on the Top Latin Albums chart for 70 weeks and reached position 6. The cover, by the way, features Flor Amelia de Gracia Barreiro, the grandmother of Residente, as a nod to what the group carried within from the very beginning.
