Calle 13

The first album by Calle 13 was released in November 2005 with a sound that blended raw reggaeton with sharp lyrics and rhythms unlike anything that existed before. Recorded between White Lion and Sony Music, the album stood out from the start for its shameless attitude and rejection of commercial molds. The cover photo, featuring the grandmother of Residente, Flor Amelia de Gracia Barreiro, made it clear from the start that this was no conventional album: it carried the DNA of a band that came to break the rules.

About the album

Calle 13, according to DoReSol

Among the seventeen tracks, two became almost instant hits. «Atrévete te, te!» not only dominated the radio waves but also won a Latin Grammy in 2006 for Best Short Form Music Video, while «Pi-di-di-di» was a direct shot at Puff Daddy — the song emerged after the producer visited in 2004, attempting to recruit voices for his Sean John brand. The lyrics, almost all written by Residente, revealed a mix of dark humor and social critique, except for «Vamo' animal», which shared credits with Severo Canta Claro.

The album did not go unnoticed: by 2008, it had already sold 250,000 copies in the United States alone, according to Nielsen, and remained on the Top Latin Albums chart for 70 weeks. But what was most striking was its impact at the 2006 Latin Grammy Awards, where it not only won Best Urban Album but also proved that reggaeton could be much more than just a danceable rhythm. The remix of «Suave» with Blass at the end of the album was just a nod to the experimentation that would define the band in the future.
