The story behind
La sirena, according to DoReSol
The mermaid by Maná floats over a rhythm that seems to drag like the waves, but with a firm pulse that hooks you from the first seconds. The song doesn’t just move forward: it takes you on a stroll through that sea which the album Sueños Líquidos turned into its stage. The track has something hypnotic, as if the melody moved to the rhythm of the tides, yet never losing control. That balance between the organic and the polished is what makes it sound fresh even after more than 25 years.
The record was born in Puerto Vallarta, where water and wind seeped into every note. The band recorded there seeking that sound that breathed the sea, and the result was a work that crossed borders: in Spain and in the United States it sold over a million copies. The mermaid was no exception; its 5:29 duration gives it space to develop that aquatic atmosphere without rushing. The album opened the doors to their first Grammy in the category of Best Latin Rock/Alternative Performance, as well as a Premio Lo Nuestro. But beyond the accolades, what’s interesting is how that trip to the Mexican coast ended up defining the sound of a key stage for the band.
