The story behind

This Latin pop ballad is not just another track in Ricardo Montaner's career: it marked his first number-one hit on the Billboard Top Latin Songs chart in early 1990. Recorded in Fort Lauderdale, at New Rever Studios, during 1989, the song was released as the lead single from Un Toque de Misterio, his third studio album. With a duration of 4:26 and a sound blending the tenderness of the ballad with the rhythm of Latin pop, the track stood out for its captivating melody and lyrics that, without resorting to melodrama, resonate with the feeling of reaching the unattainable. The arrangement, signed by Pablo Manavello —who also produced the song—, gave it that sophisticated touch that set it apart from other releases of the time.

Success was not immediate. It debuted at position 29 on the Billboard Top Latin Songs chart in late November 1989, but its rise was steady: three weeks later it was already among the top ten most played, and on January 27, 1990, it reached the top of the ranking, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. At that moment, it displaced "Cómo Fuí a Enamorarme de Tí" by Los Bukis and was later replaced by "Lambada" by Kaoma. During its time on the charts, the song spent 28 weeks within the Top 40, solidifying Montaner as a key figure in the late-80s Latin music scene. Years later, in 1999, the artist re-recorded it with the London Metropolitan Orchestra, this time in a symphonic version, and in 2004 included a Portuguese version in his repertoire.
