The story behind

It All Depends (On Who Will Buy the Wine), according to DoReSol

In It All Depends, Jerry Lee Lewis doesn’t let go of the piano, the voice, or a single second. The song moves forward with that mix of urgency and boldness that made him famous: the piano sounds like hammer blows, the lyrics play with the irony of a guy who knows that the fate of a bottle of wine —and, for that matter, of the night— depends on who has the money in their pocket. There are no fillers, no adornments, no concessions: Lewis sings as if every note were a challenge, and the result is a piece that breathes more rock & roll than many songs of his time. Clocking in at exactly three minutes, the song holds together on a single plane: that of pure energy, without pauses to catch one’s breath. It’s one of those recordings that, if you listen closely, make you understand why early rock & roll sounded like this: raw, direct, and with the attitude of someone who doesn’t think about tomorrow.

The track appeared on his first studio album, released in June 1958 by Sun Records, the label that also launched other pioneers like Hank Williams and Louis Armstrong. Recorded in Hollywood, it was produced by Jack Clement and Sam Phillips, who already knew Lewis wasn’t just any musician: his way of playing the piano —with his elbows, his feet, and sometimes even his head— was as much a part of his identity as his raspy voice. The song wasn’t a standout single, but it fits perfectly into that album where ballads, blues, and rockers coexist without labels. What’s curious is that, amid so much controlled chaos, It All Depends achieves something rare: being at once carefree and calculated, as if Lewis knew the real trick isn’t in technique, but in making you believe everything is spontaneous. And he sure pulls it off.
