The story behind
Isabelle is one of those pieces where jazz stretches to what seems impossible. It's not just the length —twelve minutes that pass like a sigh—, but how each section intertwines without ever losing the emotional thread. The track starts with a saxophone solo that expands like a soundscape, yet the most striking feature is that rhythmic shift that appears halfway through: a subtle change that, without warning, takes you to another plane. It's not a production trick, but something organic, as if the song were breathing in two different tempos. They recorded it in a single take, with no cuts or retouches. The engineers —Chris Constable, Julie Everson, Carson Lehman, Conrad Leon, Brian Rosemeyer, and Tyler Shields— worked side by side with Benjamin Tierney, who handled the final mix. Kamasi Washington not only composed and produced the track but also arranged it, giving each instrument its space without sounding forced. The result is a recording that sounds alive, as if the studio itself had been part of the performance.
