The story behind

The song Inna City Mamma by Neneh Cherry, which is part of her debut album Raw Like Sushi, presents a facet of the artist where motherhood and her personal experiences intertwine with a very particular sonic proposal. Recorded between September 1988 and January 1989 in various London studios such as Abbey Road and Battery, and one in New York, this album is distinguished by its genre blending, fusing hip hop and R&B with touches of new jack swing. The instrumentation is varied, including pianos, synthesizers, brass, and guitars, all accompanied by percussion that evokes go-go. Cherry herself handles the vocals, alternating between singing and rapping, demonstrating an individual and mature vision in her compositions.

The album Raw Like Sushi, released on June 5, 1989, not only contains Inna City Mamma but also singles that had a considerable impact. One example is Buffalo Stance, which had a previous version in 1986 that did not achieve success, but the reworking with Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass turned it into a worldwide hit. Also found on the album are tracks like Kisses on the Wind and Manchild, the latter co-written by Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack. The album's production featured the collaboration of Jonny Dollar and Cameron McVey, who is also credited as "Booga Bear" and co-wrote most of the songs with Neneh Cherry. The album's visual aesthetic, including the cover and interior photos, was handled by fashion photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino.
