The story behind
In Il gioco di Sandy the opening riff doesn’t sound like an introduction, but like a sharp blow that takes your breath away. There’s no filler or adornment: it kicks off with a guitar that cuts through the air in a meter that feels wider than a four-four, as if time itself were stretching just before Gianluca Grignani’s voice enters with a whisper that soon turns urgent. The song doesn’t ask for permission to exist; it plants itself there and drags you along with a melody that oscillates between melancholy and playfulness, as if the narrator were sharing a secret they don’t quite want to let go of. That contrast between the lyrical and the rhythmic is what makes the track linger in the memory not by chance, but because it sounds like something you already knew without having heard it before.
He recorded it in 1995 on Destinazione, his debut album, alongside producers like Massimo Luca and Vince Tempera. The album sold over half a million copies in Italy that year alone, later surpassing a million abroad, especially in South America, where a Spanish-language version was released under the title Destino. The song itself lasts three minutes and thirty-eight seconds, yet in that brief span it achieves something rare: the lyrics, focused on the concerns of young people at the time, never sound clichéd. Grignani himself premiered it at the Sanremo Music Festival in 1995, and the album went on to win a Telegatto for Revelation of the Year. It wasn’t a planned success, but the result of a sound that, without intending to, ended up resonating where least expected.
