The story behind

I Won’t Back Down, according to DoReSol

Tom Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down” was born out of an intense personal experience: an arson fire at his home in 1987. This experience was transformed into a piece of Heartland rock that, despite its direct and blunt message, became one of his most recognizable songs. Petty himself admitted that he initially hesitated to release it because of its candor. However, its “rootsy” and very American sound, with country undertones, made it stand out. Clocking in at just under three minutes, the song is in 4/4 time at 114 beats per minute, in the key of G major, and achieved remarkable success, peaking at number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Album Rock Tracks chart for five weeks.

Released in April 1989 as the lead single from his debut solo album, *Full Moon Fever*, “I Won’t Back Down” was a songwriting collaboration between Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. Lynne also served as producer, alongside Petty and Mike Campbell. There’s an interesting anecdote about the song’s recording: during the session, George Harrison not only sang and played guitar but also helped Petty—who was suffering from a cold—by preparing a ginger steam treatment to clear his airways before the take. The album *Full Moon Fever* featured members of The Heartbreakers, as well as Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, Petty’s bandmates in the Traveling Wilburys. The recording was engineered by Bill Bottrell, Mike Campbell, and Don Smith. Years later, the song took on new meaning and was played frequently on U.S. radio following the September 11 attacks, leading Petty and the Heartbreakers to perform it on the “America: A Tribute to Heroes” telethon.

In 2015, “I Won’t Back Down” made headlines again due to its similarity to Sam Smith’s song “Stay with Me.” Tom Petty’s publishing company contacted Sam Smith’s, and an agreement was reached to credit Petty and Jeff Lynne as co-writers of “Stay with Me,” granting them a percentage of the royalties. Petty clarified that he did not believe Sam Smith had plagiarized his work, acknowledging that “these things can happen” in songwriting. For his part, Sam Smith stated that he had not heard “I Won’t Back Down” before writing his song, describing the similarity as a “complete coincidence.” Although “Stay with Me” was nominated for several Grammy Awards, Petty and Lynne were not eligible for the award; they received certificates recognizing their contribution for the interpolation of their work.
