The story behind

A Face in the Crowd, according to DoReSol

When you immerse yourself in A Face in the Crowd, you encounter a love story that arises from nothing, from that person who goes unnoticed until suddenly they become the center of attention. The lyrics, written by Tom Petty alongside Jeff Lynne, paint that picture of someone who, from being an anonymous face in the crowd, transforms into the object of deep affection. The song, with its heartland rock style, lasts nearly four minutes and was released as the fourth single from Full Moon Fever in February 1990, reaching position 46 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The recording of Full Moon Fever, Tom Petty’s first solo album, was a meeting of talents. In addition to the key collaboration between Petty and Jeff Lynne in songwriting and production, the album featured musicians such as Mike Campbell, as well as figures like Roy Orbison and George Harrison, who were also part of Traveling Wilburys. The record, released on April 24, 1989, explored Petty’s musical roots and was a commercial success, reaching the third spot on the Billboard 200. The production of A Face in the Crowd involved Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Mike Campbell, with recording engineering handled by Bill Bottrell, Mike Campbell, and Don Smith. The song also saw later versions, such as Kathleen Edwards’ in 2004 for a love songs compilation, and a performance by Josh Klinghoffer in 2017, shortly after Petty’s passing. More recently, in March 2021, the band Spoon released their own version.
