The story behind
When you immerse yourself in I Need You, the first thing that catches your attention is that soft and melancholic atmosphere, almost like a sigh. It's a ballad that, according to chronicles of the time, evoked the sensibility of songs like Something. The piece, written by Gerry Beckley, was released as the second single from America's debut album, America, in 1972. The original recording, which we hear today, dates from 1971 and featured the engineering work of Ken Scott.
This song had a notable chart trajectory. It reached ninth place on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for ten weeks, and was the group's second single to reach the top ten, following the success of A Horse with No Name. It also positioned itself in seventh place on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and in eighth place on both the Cash Box Singles Chart and the Record World Singles Chart. For some later editions, such as History: America's Greatest Hits from 1975, George Martin performed a remix, adjusting the tone and enhancing the bass line. An alternative version of this mix, based on Martin's work, appeared in 2015 on the release Archives, Vol. 1. The song has been included in various live albums, such as Live (1977) and In Concert (1985), and in compilations such as Highway (2000).
