The story behind

I Am the Highway, according to DoReSol

When the remaining members of Rage Against the Machine sought a new voice for their project, the name Chris Cornell emerged as a clear option. Producer Rick Rubin, aware of Cornell's vocal power, showed them Soundgarden's track _Slaves & Bulldozers_ so they could get an idea of his range. Thus, Audioslave was born, a supergroup that fused the energy of 90s alternative rock with 70s hard rock.

From that sonic crossover, I Am the Highway emerged, a track released in September 2003 as the fourth single from their self-titled debut album, which saw the light of day in November 2002. The song, composed by Tom Morello, Chris Cornell, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk, and produced by Rick Rubin, reached number 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts and number 3 on the Modern Rock Tracks charts in 2004, in addition to reaching number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100. Curiously, no specific music video was made for this single, but the band used material from their DVD _Live in Cuba_ for its promotion. The title of this song was also used to name the 2019 concert in memory of Chris Cornell.
