The story behind

In the context of the album Tragic Kingdom, the song Hey You! was released as the final single. This track marks the musical farewell of Eric Stefani, the original keyboardist, who left the band in 1995 due to creative differences. The production of the album, and therefore this song, was handled by Matthew Wilder, an external figure to the band who, it is mentioned, was not to Eric Stefani's liking. The recording of Tragic Kingdom spanned from March 1993 to October 1995 across eleven studios in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Musically, Hey You! fuses elements of ska punk and psychedelic rock, with a duration of 3:35. The lyrics present a critical view of marriage, with a protagonist who dreams of getting married, reflected in phrases like "You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll / Your name will never change". The song was composed by Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal. Although it received divided opinions from critics, some considered it a highlight of the album, while others pointed to it as a filler track. The single was released exclusively in the Netherlands on February 23, 1998, including a live version recorded on June 1, 1997, in Anaheim, California. Upon its release, the song reached number fifty-one on the Dutch Single Top 100 chart, remaining for a total of six weeks. The music video accompanying the single uses footage from a live performance, directed by Sophie Muller.
