The story behind
There's something about the energy of *Spiderwebs* that grabs you from the first second. It's not just the speed or the infectious rhythm, but the way Gwen Stefani's voice intertwines with the instrumentation, creating a sense of urgency and playful discontent. The lyrics, inspired by an admirer who recited uninspired poetry to her, become a direct response to those around her, a kind of "leave me alone" with an irresistible groove. It's one of those songs that, once you hear it, gets stuck in your head, inviting you to join in that energy.
The creation of *Spiderwebs* happened at a key moment for No Doubt. After Eric Stefani's departure in early 1995, the rest of the band had to take the reins of songwriting. This led to the songs, like *Spiderwebs*, having a more intimate and personal character. Unlike *Just a Girl*, which was gestated more collaboratively in home recordings, for *Spiderwebs*, Tony Kanal and Gwen Stefani laid the groundwork, and then Tom Dumont contributed the guitar parts. The band was very satisfied with the final result, noting how the version that made it onto the album *Tragic Kingdom* was much faster and more energetic than the original idea, which had a more relaxed and funky feel. Despite not being released as a commercial single in the United States, its radio airplay was very strong, reaching number 18 on the Airplay chart.
