The story behind

Heatwave, according to DoReSol

The song Heatwave, with a duration of just 1:54, is a piece that The Who included on their second album, titled A Quick One. This record, originally released in the United Kingdom on December 9, 1966, had a different distribution in the United States in April 1967, under the name Happy Jack and with a modified tracklist. What's interesting about A Quick One is that it breaks with the norm of Pete Townshend as the main or sole songwriter. Here, all members contributed material: Roger Daltrey wrote one song, while John Entwistle and Keith Moon each contributed two. Within this set of original compositions, The Who also decided to include a cover of the track Heat Wave, originally by Holland–Dozier–Holland. The album closes with an extensive musical piece titled A Quick One, While He's Away, which would later serve as inspiration for the rock operas the band would create.

The production of Heatwave, as well as the rest of the album A Quick One, was handled by Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. The Who, formed in 1964, stood out for their live energy, even destroying instruments on stage. The group, composed of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, managed to place 27 singles in the Top 40 in the United Kingdom and the United States, in addition to 17 albums in the Top 10. Their success in the United Kingdom was boosted by tracks like I Can't Explain in January 1965. Albums such as My Generation (1965) and A Quick One (1966) reached the British Top 5. The first major hit in the US Top 40 was Happy Jack, followed by I Can See For Miles. Their presence at festivals like Monterey, Woodstock, and Isle of Wight cemented their fame. Subsequently, they released Tommy in 1969, the first in a series of Top 10 albums in the United States, including Live at Leeds (1970), Who's Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973), The Who By Numbers (1975), Who Are You (1978), and The Kids Are Alright (1979). Sadly, Keith Moon passed away in 1978.
