The story behind
The song Guayaquil, which is part of Don Omar's debut album titled The Last Don, immerses us in a rhythm that helped define the sound of reggaeton in the early 2000s. This work, originally released in 2003, became a turning point for the genre, achieving notable international diffusion. The production of this track, like much of the album, was handled by Eduardo Reyes, who also took care of the arrangements, giving it a distinctive sonic structure. The track's duration is 3 minutes and 9 seconds, a concise yet effective format for its musical proposal.
The Last Don not only marked the beginning of Don Omar's solo career but was also fundamental to the expansion of reggaeton beyond its borders. The album, distributed by Universal Music Group, featured the participation of key artists from the scene such as Daddy Yankee, Glory, Héctor “El Bambino”, Trébol Clan, and Gallego, which amplified its reach. A later reissue, released in 2006 under the The Gold Series series by Machete Music, reaffirmed the importance of this material. The joint work of producers like Luny Tunes and Eliel on the album, although not directly on Guayaquil according to specific credits, contributed to consolidating a sound that Don Omar, along with figures like Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón, popularized throughout Latin America and Spain during that decade.
