The story behind

Gold, according to DoReSol

The song Gold by Spandau Ballet stands out for its connection to the world of cinema, particularly due to the influence of John Barry's compositions in the James Bond films. Written by Gary Kemp, the piece was conceived as a homage to those cinematic themes, which is reflected in its energy and drama. Although it received mixed reviews, it managed to reach second place on the UK singles chart and ranked among the top ten in several other countries. However, its performance in the United States was less impressive, leading the band to reconsider their strategy with the record label.

Gold was recorded between October and December 1982, as part of the album True, released in March 1983. During this process, Kemp sought to create a melody that evoked the grandeur of a film theme, also inspired by the famous theme "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey. At the time, Kemp and his brother, Martin, who played bass in the band, still lived with their parents, and it was in this family setting where the song began to take shape. Although it initially failed to capture the producers' attention, the band decided to work with Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, who ultimately produced most of the album at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. Despite the record label's initial reluctance to release a fourth single, the momentum generated by the prior success of True allowed Gold to see the light of day, marking a significant moment in the band's career.
