The story behind
Communication, according to DoReSol
The song Communication by Spandau Ballet stands out for its fusion of Eurodisco rhythms and a catchy melody, making it a memorable piece from their repertoire. Released on February 4, 1983, it was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, alongside other tracks that would become part of their album True. This tropical setting influenced the song's sound, which blends vibrant instrumentation with the distinctive voice of their vocalist, Tony Hadley. The music video, featuring a cinematic narrative, helped the song gain popularity, especially on MTV.
The creation process of Communication was marked by a shift in the band's musical direction. Guitarist and composer Gary Kemp decided to adopt a more pop-oriented approach, moving away from the dance sound that had characterized them early on. This change was reflected in their compositions, and Communication became one of the standout tracks on the album. Although the song was not the first choice to follow their successful single Lifeline, it managed to capture the public's attention, reaching number 12 on the UK singles chart and achieving notable positions in other countries. The album's production was handled by Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, who appreciated Kemp's new style and helped shape this fresh, direct sound.
