The story behind
Led Zeppelin plays Going to California in an acoustic set, as if they were in a living room. Jimmy Page's guitar sounds soft, almost as if he were playing for himself. Robert Plant sings with that voice that seems to come from another world, and John Paul Jones adds a touch of mandolin that gives it a bit of soul. The song was recorded in 1971, in a studio in England, and at first it was only about an earthquake they experienced in California. It later became something more, something that Plant says reflects his life at 22. The lyrics speak of Joni Mitchell, a singer they greatly admired. Live, Plant used to say "Joni" after a verse, as if talking about someone who understood him. The song was played in concerts, but always in the softer sets, as if it were a story told at the end of the night. ↓ Skip to chords
