Blink-182 wrote "Going Away to College" in 1999, towards the end of recording their album *Enema of the State*. The song was born after producer Jerry Finn asked Mark Hoppus to write another song about breakups. Hoppus, who was home sick on Valentine's Day, was inspired by the movie *Can't Hardly Wait*, which talked about teenagers who break up upon graduating. He wrote the lyrics in ten minutes on a napkin, thinking about how it feels to be in love and have to let someone go to college.

It is a fast pop punk song, with chopped verses and a chorus that sticks in your head. Hoppus sings from the perspective of a guy wondering if his photo is still in his girlfriend's closet. The song is not just sadness, it is also anxiety and a kind of farewell that doesn't end. The drums were recorded in a jazz studio, because the rest of the album was already finished. The song was played live and covered by other artists, but it has always been one of the band's most intimate songs.
