The story behind
When AC/DC faced the possibility of disbanding after the tragic loss of their vocalist Bon Scott in February 1980, the band made a crucial decision. Instead of halting their path, they recruited Brian Johnson, who had previously been part of the group Geordie. This was the starting point for the album Back in Black, released on July 25, 1980. The songwriting for this work fell to Johnson and brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. The recording took place in the Bahamas over seven weeks, between April and May of that same year, under the production of Robert J. This album marked a new chapter for the Australian band, consolidating their sound and achieving significant success.
The context in which Given the Dog a Bone emerges is marked by the evolution of AC/DC since their beginnings in Sydney in 1973. Brothers Malcolm and Angus Young founded the band, which initially featured Dave Evans as vocalist. Soon, Angus Young's live performances, with his distinctive schoolboy uniform, became a hallmark. The arrival of Bon Scott in 1976 was an important influence, coinciding with the release of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. After moving to the United Kingdom, the band experienced notable growth with albums like Let There Be Rock (1977) and Powerage (1978), followed by If You Want Blood You've Got It (1978) and the successful Highway to Hell (1979). The death of Scott in February 1980, after a night in London, led Brian Johnson to join the group. This change, far from stopping them, propelled AC/DC to a new level, with Back in Black reaching the top of the charts and opening doors in the United States.
