The story behind
The energy of Get On Top seems to be born from a spontaneous session, a moment of musical connection that arose shortly after John Frusciante absorbed the intensity of Public Enemy. In this piece, Frusciante's guitar is adorned with a wah effect, with notable use of an Ibanez WH-10. Interestingly, the guitar solo we hear, which is subtly presented in the center of the song, was originally intended to be much more prominent. It was listening to Steve Howe's work on Yes's "Siberian Khatru" that led Frusciante to reconsider his approach, opting for a more restrained expression.
This track is part of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh studio album, Californication, released in 1999 under the production of Rick Rubin and the label Warner Bros. Records. The recording of this album marked John Frusciante's return to guitar, replacing Dave Navarro. This change brought about a sonic evolution for the band, distancing themselves from the style they had explored in 1995's One Hot Minute. Californication, in addition to including hits like "Around the World" and "Scar Tissue", addressed themes ranging from sexual innuendo to reflections on lust, death, and drug use. The composition of Get On Top is attributed to Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, Flea, and John Frusciante.
