The story behind

Get Down on It, according to DoReSol

When you come across Get Down on It, it's easy to get swept away by its infectious rhythm and that chorus that sticks in your head. What makes this song so special, beyond being a dance track, is how it captures the signature sound of Kool & the Gang. It's as if they bottled up the pure energy of funk and condensed it into just over four minutes. The track was originally released in 1981 as part of the album Something Special. The production was handled by Eumir Deodato, who worked alongside the band to shape it.

The impact of Get Down on It was immediate and felt across multiple regions. In the United States, it climbed to the top ten on the Billboard Pop and R&B charts in early 1982. Across the Atlantic, in the United Kingdom, the song entered the charts in December 1981 and rose to the third position, becoming one of their biggest hits there at the time. It spent a total of 12 weeks on the UK chart. Even a decade later, in 1996, it had a re-release in the UK that, while lasting only one week on the charts, proved the song's lasting influence.

But the story of Get Down on It doesn't end there. In 1996, English singer Peter Andre re-recorded it for his album Natural, featuring the group Past to Present. This new version resonated strongly in Oceania, reaching the fifth spot in Australia and the top position in New Zealand, where it earned platinum certification in April 1996. Later, in 2004, British group Blue included their own rendition on their compilation Best of Blue. For this recording, they collaborated with Kool & the Gang themselves and rapper Lil' Kim. The single was well-received across continental Europe, peaking at number three in Spain and staying in the top twenty for eight weeks. The press at the time, such as the Evening Chronicle, highlighted the energy of Blue's version, noting the addition of Lil' Kim's rap to Kool & the Gang's original funk foundation.
