The story behind

Five Years, according to DoReSol

When you hear the first bars of *Five Years*, you are suddenly met with a tense atmosphere. The drum beat that kicks in, described as a "slow-fast-fast," gives you a sense of urgency, almost like a racing heartbeat. And over that foundation, David Bowie's voice tells you a shocking story: the end of the world is near, there are only five years left. What's interesting is how it's narrated. The first verses are told from the perspective of a boy who learns this devastating news, and the lyrics build with everyday imagery, almost like "scene cuts" of city life, including references to American cultural stereotypes. But in the third verse, the voice changes and addresses you directly, the listener, as if showing you the general indifference to the impending disaster. The song grows in intensity, adding instruments until it reaches a climax where the strings and Bowie's voice scream the title, transforming anguish into something almost cathartic.

This piece was recorded in November 1971 at Trident Studios in London. David Bowie, along with Ken Scott, handled the production, working with his backing band, The Spiders from Mars, composed of Mick Ronson on guitar, Trevor Bolder on bass, and Mick Woodmansey on drums. *Five Years* is the track that opens the album *The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars*, and it serves as a perfect introduction to the overall concept: an apocalyptic future and the arrival of an alien savior, Ziggy Stardust. The way the song was constructed is remarkable; it starts with that drum pattern that creates an ominous atmosphere, and as it progresses, layers are added, first with an autoharp, then acoustic guitar, and finally the strings, which reach a point where they almost compete with the sound of distorted electric guitar and background shouting, painting a sonic picture of desperation.
