The story behind

Fanny (Be Tender With My Love), according to DoReSol

This song is one of those that gets under your skin and won't let go. It's not the Bee Gees' best-known song, but when you listen to it closely, you understand why the group changed direction in the '70s. The sound here is pure soul with a touch of early disco—something that in 1975 sounded fresh yet familiar, as if you’d heard it before but couldn’t quite place it. Barry Gibb’s voice floats over a laid-back rhythm, with that falsetto that would later become his trademark in the disco era, but here it still has a more intimate feel, as if he were singing just for the listener.

They recorded it on *Main Course*, the album that pulled them out of their commercial slump and led them to reinvent themselves. It was the first to feature Blue Weaver on keyboards, a change that’s evident in the color of the harmonies and in how the piano and synthesizers intertwine with the guitars. Producer Arif Mardin gave it that warm glow, as if the song had been crafted in a studio that smelled of coffee and worn-out recording tapes. They weren’t trying to sound like anyone else: they wanted that disco-infused R&B to be their new language, and on “Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)” they achieved it without forcing the rhythm. It lasted four minutes and five seconds, but within that time there are melodies that repeat with a deceptively natural flow: there are no unnecessary detours, just the feeling that every note is exactly where it should be.
