The story behind

Everything Must Change, according to DoReSol

Paul Young recorded Everything Must Change in 1984 as part of his second album, The Secret of Association, a record that cemented his place in mid-80s English pop rock. The song was not just another track on the album: it became the second single released by CBS Records in November of that year, shortly after his solo debut. But what was interesting was not just its release, but how it expanded beyond British borders. In 1985, Columbia Records brought it to North America, while in the Netherlands and France, the same edition included as a B-side a version of Soldier's Things by Tom Waits, something uncommon in standard releases. There were even special editions, such as a 1984 Christmas double single or a maxi in South Africa, showing how the track transcended its original format.

Behind this sound lies a key detail: the production was handled by Laurie Latham, who had already worked with Young on his first album. The song lasts 5 minutes and 34 seconds, an unconventional length for radio at the time, but one that gave it space to develop that mix of melancholy and urgency that defines it. The album, by the way, did not only include Everything Must Change, but also hits like Everytime You Go Away (a cover of Hall & Oates) and I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down, all bearing Young's signature and that of his keyboardist Ian Kewley. What’s curious is that, despite its commercial success—the album reached number one in the UK and the Top 20 in the US, with double platinum certification in the UK and gold in the US—the song itself was not the most prominent track on the album. However, its structure, with that air between ballad and soft rock, made it stand out on its own merits.
