The story behind
The song Engaña has a hypnotic air that makes it stand out in Bocanada. The track progresses with a rhythm that repeats, but not in a predictable way: there's a subtle interplay between what is expected and what happens. The main melody is built on layers of intertwined sounds, creating a sense of constant movement without ever losing its center. It's not just the structure that captivates, but how each instrument — from the guitar to the synthesizers — contributes a distinct nuance, as if they were voices in a conversation where no one wants to give up their turn.
This album arrived at a key moment for Gustavo Cerati. After the closure of Soda Stereo in 1995 and the release of Sueño Stereo, the musician embarked on his first solo work, though he himself had called it Amor amarillo in 1993. Bocanada was recorded in 1999 under the Ariola label, and in it he explored electronic sounds that still surprise today with their freshness. Engaña, with its 4:12 duration, is an example of how Cerati managed to fuse the experimental with the accessible, without falling into the obvious. The album ended up being a turning point, both for his career and for the local scene, and this track in particular encapsulates that search for a new language.
