The story behind
En la oscuridad, according to DoReSol
“In the Darkness” doesn’t sound like just another track by Cultura Profética, but rather a moment where Puerto Rican reggae becomes more intimate without losing its strength. The song progresses with a rhythmic foundation that repeats, yet it’s not a simple loop: there’s a play between the beats that makes each cycle sound distinct, as if the melody were breathing. Rodríguez’s voice enters calmly, almost whispering at first, but the chorus bursts forth without warning, pulling the listener into a place where the darkness isn’t just the title—it’s a palpable sensation.
The track was born during a full tour, between 2007 and 2010, when the band had been playing the same songs in different venues for years. Cultura Profética released La Dulzura in 2010 under their own label, La Mafafa, after traditional record labels failed to offer terms that satisfied them. Rodríguez put it plainly: “Record labels go through difficult times, so we decided to do it ourselves.” Before the album saw the light of day, some songs, like La Compl, had already circulated online, but En la oscuridad came to stay: it lasts 4 minutes and 33 seconds, enough time for the atmosphere to settle and the message to sink deep.
