The story behind

The song El viento, part of Manu Chao's debut album, Clandestino, released in 1998, brings us a particular sonic atmosphere. One of the distinctive characteristics of this work is the inclusion of speech fragments, such as a snippet from a speech by Subcomandante Marcos. The recording of this album was done in a rather unique way, as the musician himself handled much of it in various places around the world, using a small laptop computer referred to in the album notes as Estudio Clandestino. This home recording approach gave the album a raw and authentic sound. Rolling Stone magazine in France recognized it as one of the best French rock albums, and it was also included in the list of 1001 albums to listen to before you die. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it 469th on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Manu Chao, whose full name is José Manuel Arturo Tomás Chao Ortega, was born in Paris, France, in 1961. With Spanish roots, his music often reflects his origins and experiences, singing in several languages such as French, Spanish, English, Galician, and Portuguese. Before his solo career, he was part of bands like Hot Pants and Los Carayos, and later co-founded Mano Negra in 1987, achieving notoriety in Europe and Latin America. After the dissolution of Mano Negra in 1995, Chao began his solo path, accompanied by his live band, Radio Bemba. He currently resides in Barcelona. His lyrics often address themes such as love, city life, and immigration, influenced by his family history and his political convictions, which are often associated with anarchism, as can be seen in Clandestino.
