The story behind
This song by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso begins with a piano that weaves into an obsessive rhythm, as if time were stretching until it breaks. The main melody, repeated in seven-time loops, sounds like something you already knew but never heard this way: a mix of melancholy and urgency that doesn’t resolve until the end. The title, Dopo... niente è più lo stesso, seems like a warning: after this, nothing will ever be the same again. The voice of Francesco Di Giacomo floats over this instrumental base, almost like a narrator observing from afar what is happening, without judgment, just recounting.
They recorded it in Rome in the early 70s, when Italian prog was still searching for its identity between jazz, classical, and rock. Vittorio Nocenzi composed the music on an out-of-tune piano they had in the studio, and the result was a nearly ten-minute piece where each instrument seems to have its own space, yet everything fits together like clockwork. It wasn’t a song meant for the radio: it was a journey that demanded attention, and in 2015, Rolling Stone ranked it among the 50 best prog rock albums of all time. But that came later. At the time, it was just four musicians trying to capture something they couldn’t quite define.
