The story behind

Don’t Cry (alt. lyrics), according to DoReSol

Guns N’ Roses recorded Don’t Cry (alt. lyrics) at a time when the band already had everything against them, yet the album ended up breaking records. The song appeared on Use Your Illusion II, released in September 1991 by Geffen Records on the same day as its twin Use Your Illusion I. The tour that followed, the Use Your Illusion Tour, kicked off in May of that year, four months before the albums saw the light of day due to production delays. Don’t Cry (alt. lyrics) was not the lead single—that spot was taken by You Could Be Mine—but it still stormed into the market with force: it sold 770,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, even outperforming its sibling release. By 2010, the album had already amassed over five and a half million units in United States alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Both records ultimately earned 7× Platinum certifications.

The alternate version of Don’t Cry runs for 4:44 and was recorded between the walls of a borrowed studio, with Mike Clink at the helm as recording engineer and producer. Bill Price handled the mixing, a detail that shines through in how Guns N’ Roses’ vocals sound on the track: raw, unfiltered, yet with a clarity that makes every note resonate as if you were right there. They weren’t aiming to polish every detail; they wanted to capture the energy of a moment when the band had nothing left to lose.
