The story behind
The song Different People, with its 4 minutes and 35 seconds duration, is found on No Doubt's third studio album, titled Tragic Kingdom. This album, released in October 1995, marked a turning point for the band, achieving significant commercial success and contributing to the resurgence of ska in the nineties. It was the last work in which original keyboardist Eric Stefani participated, who left the band in 1994. The recording of Tragic Kingdom spanned a considerable period, between March 1993 and October 1995, taking place in eleven different studios in the Greater Los Angeles area.
The album Tragic Kingdom was produced by Matthew Wilder and spawned seven singles, including Just a Girl and Don't Speak. The latter track, in particular, had a notable impact, remaining at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for sixteen weeks and reaching prominent positions on international charts. The band, formed in Anaheim, California, in 1986, evolved from its ska roots towards a sound closer to soft rock, with influences from Jamaican reggae. While their debut album, No Doubt, released six years after their formation, did not have the expected impact, Tragic Kingdom catapulted No Doubt to worldwide fame, earning a Diamond certification in the United States. Subsequently, the band continued to release material, such as Return of Saturn and Rock Steady, the latter with which they won two Grammy Awards for songs like Hey Baby and Underneath It All. In 2003, they released a greatest hits compilation, The Singles 1992-2003.
