The story behind
When Soda Stereo released "Dietético" in 1984, they not only presented their first single but also defined their calling card to the world. The song falls into what came to be known as "fun music," a movement that burst onto the Argentine scene in the eighties with a lighthearted and humorous air. The track cleverly plays with the sound of "Soda" and the concept of "Dietético" (Dietetic), a connection that the band, with their background in advertising, knew how to exploit from the start. The music video, a relatively new tool at the time, was key to this strategy, and a version of the song previously recorded for a demo accompanied the visuals.
The lyrics of "Dietético", beyond their jocular tone about the modern obsession with a slender figure and diets, hide a deeper layer of meaning. In its final verses, the phrase "¡el régimen se acabó, se acabó!" (the diet is over, it's over!) can be interpreted not only as the end of a diet but also as a veiled allusion to the end of the military regime in Argentina, which had concluded a few months before the song's release in 1984. This double meaning resonated particularly in other Ibero-American countries, where some were still living under dictatorships and longed for democracy. The debut album, bearing the band's name, was produced by Federico Moura of Virus and is distinguished by this humorous and ironic style, marking a particular sound within Soda Stereo's later discography.
