The story behind
Did It in a Minute, according to DoReSol
Hall & Oates turned a car ride into a hit. It all started in the backseat of a car: Janna Allen hummed a chorus she had come up with, and at that moment, Daryl Hall knew there was something special there. It wasn’t just a catchy melody, but a hook that stuck in the memory. Within minutes, Hall worked out the chord progression on a keyboard and, together with Sara Allen, shaped the verse lyrics. The result was Did It in a Minute, a song that isn’t just heard—it’s felt from the first measure.
The recording took place in 1981 at Electric Lady in New York City, a studio already steeped in classics. Bruce Buchalter captured the sound on tape, while Neil Kernon polished the details in the mix. The album Private Eyes—where the track was included—hit the market in March 1982 under the RCA label, but the song already carried an intriguing pedigree: its chorus played with the repetition of *"did it"*, a device Hall & Oates had borrowed from Eric Carmen and, even earlier, from the Beach Boys. The musical joke was complete when the song climbed to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, cementing its place as one of three singles from the album to reach the top ten.
