The story behind

I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do), according to DoReSol

I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do) sounds like that kind of song that grabs you from the first chord and won’t let go. It’s not just the sticky groove or Daryl Hall’s voice floating over the synthesizers, but how all of it comes together to tell a wordless story: that of a guy who won’t give in to what doesn’t suit him, even if it sounds good. The opening riff, that bass that comes in like a train but with swing, is pure modern soul with a touch of rock that had been around before. The most curious thing is that, even though the song feels like a nearly five-minute journey, every section flows effortlessly, as if time itself stretches just to keep you from missing a single detail.

They recorded it in Philadelphia, at a time when Hall and Oates had already tried their luck separately in the soul music circuit and even in fleeting projects like Temptones or Gulliver. Engineer Bruce Buchalter captured that warm yet clean sound, and later Neil Kernon—who also co-produced—gave it that brightness in the mix that makes the keyboards sound like clouds and the bass like an anchor. The production, handled by all three, blends the precision of R&B with the boldness of pop rock that would make them famous by the late 70s. They weren’t trying to sound like anyone else, just like themselves, and the result is that mix of stubbornness and elegance that defines the song.
