The story behind

The album Clandestino is the first studio work by French artist Manu Chao, released in 1998. This record includes numerous audio fragments, among them parts of a speech by Subcomandante Marcos. As with his later albums, Chao recorded most of the material himself in various locations around the world, using a small laptop computer, which he refers to in the album's liner notes as Estudio Clandestino. The French magazine Rolling Stone ranked it at number 67 on the list of the greatest French rock albums of all time. In addition, the album was mentioned in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" and reached number 469 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2020.
