The story behind
There are songs that are born from a moment when life feels at its limit. Destinazione paradiso is one of them: it was written by Gianluca Grignani in 1994, during an episode of extreme anguish that he himself described as a moment when his lack of confidence led him to the brink of an irreversible decision. The words came out as a personal release, without intending to become a universal message, though it ended up resonating with an entire generation. The song premiered live on February 23, 1995, during the 45th Sanremo Song Festival, in the category for new talents. Due to a last-minute change in the performance order, Grignani ended up opening the night instead of Danilo Amerio, who arrived late because of a traffic jam. With 6,541 votes in his semifinal, he came in first, and the next day, in the final, he received 9,434 votes, placing him in sixth position. But that was not the end of the story.
The single was released in February 1995 under the labels PolyGram and Mercury, with a duration of 3:46 and a melodic rock sound that contrasted with the rawer sound of other songs of the time. Grignani included it on his self-titled debut album, which sold 650,000 copies in Italy that same year and exceeded one million in total, with great acceptance in South America thanks to a Spanish version titled Destino paraíso. The album, produced by Massimo Luca and Vince Tempera, focused on ballads that reflected the concerns of 90s youth, and this song ended up being its calling card. In 2016, Grignani re-recorded it, this time as a duet with Elisa, for his compilation album Una strada in mezzo al cielo.
