Desmitificar

The first time I heard Desmitificar, what struck me most was that rhythm that never quite fits, as if the beat breathes in 7/8 without warning. It’s not a mistake: Marina Sena plays with that tension from the first chord, using the imbalance so the melody floats over something that seems unstable but ends up being hypnotic. The artist’s voice moves between whispers and contained shouts, as if each word had to carve its way through layers of sound that aren’t always in sync. It’s a song that sounds like an intimate conversation, but with the structure of a maze where every turn leads to another unexpected place.

They recorded it in a small studio in São Paulo during the last months of 2024, just as Marina was finishing polishing the lyrics for Coisas Naturais. The album was released in March 2025, but Desmitificar had already been tested live months earlier, in performances where the artist adjusted the tempo to the room’s atmosphere. The song wasn’t an official single, but it ended up standing out for its quirkiness: in Coisas Naturais, it coexists with more direct tracks like Numa Ilha or Ouro de Tolo, yet its sound makes it feel like a parenthesis between what everyone expected and what she wanted to explore. That same year, the album received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album in Portuguese, while Ouro de Tolo —another track from the same album— was also recognized in the Best Song category. Marina had been on that list before, but this time it was two nominations in a single edition, something that hadn’t happened since her debut.
