The story behind
“Desapariciones” doesn’t sound like just another track on the album El León, but rather like a song that stands out in the middle of the record and demands your attention. It’s not just the rhythm — that ska with reggae touches that Los Fabulosos Cadillacs already handled with ease — but the way the song is built: the bass sets a pulse that stretches out, the percussion enters with rolls that don’t sound rushed, and Vicente’s voice — always recognizable — carries the lyrics as if each word weighed more than the last. The result is a piece that isn’t meant to be danced to, but listened to, as if the ska had suddenly turned more serious.
Recorded in Buenos Aires in 1992, El León was the album where Los Fabulosos Cadillacs decided to blend all the rhythms they had been experimenting with — from calypso to Cuban son — and Desapariciones ended up being the perfect closer to that exploration. It wasn’t the first single from the album, but it was one of the ones that resonated the most: in Latin America, where ska already had deep roots, the song found an unexpected echo. The music video, released later, reinforced that connection: raw, almost documentary-like images that accompanied the track as if they were part of the same story.
