The story behind

Deep, according to DoReSol

"Deep," one of the most energetic tracks on Pearl Jam's debut album, *Ten*, stands out for the power of its sound and the depth of its lyrics. The music, composed by guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament, combines with Eddie Vedder’s lyrics to create an intense atmosphere. The explosive interplay between Ament’s bass and Gossard’s guitar is particularly striking, giving the song a notably aggressive edge within the album. The lyrics of “Deep” delve into dark themes such as death and suicide, reflecting a recurring theme in the lyrical universe of *Ten*. The song received its first live performance on February 8, 1991, in Long Beach, California, during the God Save The Queen event. Over time, it has appeared on various live recordings and on the LP *Drop in the Park*, part of the Super Deluxe edition of the 2009 reissue of *Ten*—the same year it was also made available for the *Rock Band* series.

Pearl Jam’s origins date back to 1990 in Seattle, United States, following the breakup of Mother Love Bone, the former band of Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. The two musicians began rehearsing with guitarist Mike McCready and recorded a five-song instrumental demo, with Matt Cameron on drums. These recordings found their way to drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist Eddie Vedder, who were invited to audition in Seattle. Many of the songs that would make up *Ten* emerged from these instrumental sessions or were ideas from Mother Love Bone to which Vedder added new melodies and lyrics. The album, released on August 27, 1991, by Epic Records, stood out for its classic rock influence, setting it apart from other releases of the time. For the recording of “Deep” and the rest of the album, the team included Don Gilmore, Dave Hillis, and Adrian Moore as engineers. Tim Palmer handled the mixing, and Rick Parashar produced the album alongside Pearl Jam. From its inception, Pearl Jam was known for its independent stance toward the music industry, rejecting practices such as the creation of promotional videos and even boycotting companies like Ticketmaster. This attitude led Rolling Stone magazine to note in 2006 that the band had spent much of the previous decade “destroying its own fame”—a testament to its commitment to its artistic vision.
