The story behind
When Rubén Blades embarked on this project, it was his first studio album, although for Pete Rodríguez and Su Orquesta it already represented their eleventh. Recorded in 1970 under the Alegre Records label, this work laid the foundation for future compositions. Tracks like Descarga Caliente, El Bravo, and Juan Gonzáles, although they did not achieve the expected impact at the time, served as inspiration for later pieces that would resonate more, such as Pedro Navaja, Plástico, and Siembra. The recording of this album coincided with a family trip by Blades to New York. It was precisely in this city, after his second arrival, that Pancho Cristal, producer for Alegre Records, noticed Blades' talent, having previously produced notable hits.
The experience of Rubén Blades in New York during the gestation of this album also left its mark on his creativity. In fact, the atmosphere and experiences of that period inspired the composition of El Cazanguero, a song that would later find its place on the album The Good, the Bad, the Ugly. The total duration of De Panamá a New York is 4 minutes and 19 seconds.
