The story behind

Recording a live album inside a prison was not common, but for Johnny Cash, the idea of taking his music to places like Folsom State Prison had been brewing since he released "Folsom Prison Blues" in 1955. It wasn't until 1967 that things moved, with changes at Columbia Records that put Bob Johnston in charge of producing his material. At that time, Cash, having already overcome addiction problems, was looking to give his career a new boost. Thus, on January 13, 1968, at Folsom State Prison in California, accompanied by June Carter, Carl Perkins, and his band, the Tennessee Three, he performed two concerts. Despite Columbia not giving it much initial promotion, the result, At Folsom Prison, ended up reaching the top spot on the Top Country Charts.

The deep voice and distinctive "boom-chick-a-boom" rhythm of the Tennessee Three were hallmarks of Johnny Cash, who was known as "The Man in Black" for his attire. His repertoire covered themes of regret, guilt, and redemption, as in "I Walk The Line" or "Folsom Prison Blues", but he also explored humor in songs like "A Boy Named Sue", or the pure energy of "Get Rhythm". Born J. R. Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas, in 1932, and passing away in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2003, Cash became a key figure of the 20th century, considered the King of Country Music and the creator of his own style, fusing country, gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly.
