The story behind

Coma, according to DoReSol

Guns N’ Roses took hard rock to a place where songs were no longer just riffs and screams: Coma is a journey of over ten minutes that builds like a slow nightmare, where the music and lyrics intertwine to tell a story that Axl Rose himself lived. There is no chorus to anchor it, no classic structure to contain it; instead, the song progresses like a whisper that turns into a scream and then fades away, reflecting the highs and lows of someone on the brink of death. The track was born from a real moment: after an intentional overdose, Rose woke up in a hospital with a strange clarity, as if his body and mind had decided to disconnect for an instant. That feeling of floating between life and nothingness is what breathes through every note, every shift in rhythm, every silence that seems to last an eternity.

The music was born on a piano, in a rented house in Hollywood Hills that Slash and Izzy shared after the Appetite for Destruction tour. Rose had tried to write it for months without success, until the accident gave him the words and chords. The result is a work that oscillates between the ethereal and the brutal: Dizzy Reed’s keyboards open the path with a melody that seems suspended in the air, while Matt Sorum’s drums and Duff’s bass hit as if the body were still struggling to stay conscious. The mix, handled by Bill Price, plays with the depth of the sound, making the instruments sound like distant echoes or nearby blows, depending on what the narrative requires. Coma is not just a long song; it is an experience that demands attention, as if every minute were an irregular heartbeat of someone who is no longer entirely there.
